Uganda is divided into districts for local government purposes. These districts are further split into smaller local government units that were already in place before the Constitution took effect. This structure determines which local council or authority serves your area. The government must follow these boundaries when providing services like schools, roads, and healthcare at the local level.

Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, for the purposes of local government, Uganda shall be divided into the districts referred to in <span class="underline-gradient ref" data-tippy-content data-ref="5:2">Article 5(2)</span> of this Constitution.

The districts referred to in <span class="underline-gradient ref" data-tippy-content data-ref="177:1">clause (1)</span> of this Article shall be taken to have been divided into the lower local government units which existed immediately before the coming into force of this Constitution.

Article 177: How Uganda's Districts Are Set Up

<div><strong>1</strong> Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, for the purposes of local government, Uganda shall be divided into the districts referred to in Article 5(2) of this Constitution.</div>

<div><strong>2</strong> Subject to Article 178 of this Constitution, Uganda shall consist of—</div><div style='margin-left:16px; margin-top:8px; margin-bottom:6px;'><strong>(a)</strong> regions administered by regional governments when districts have agreed to form regions as provided for in this Constitution;</div><div style='margin-left:16px; margin-top:8px; margin-bottom:6px;'><strong>(b)</strong> Kampala; and</div><div style='margin-left:16px; margin-top:8px; margin-bottom:6px;'><strong>(c)</strong> the districts of Uganda,&lt;/br&gt;&lt;/br&gt;
as specified in the First Schedule to this Constitution, and such other districts as may be established in accordance with this Constitution or any other law.</div>
